FUNDRAISING GUIDE · UPDATED OCTOBER 25, 2026

A pitch deck is not simply a shorter business plan.

The plan establishes the full investment case. The deck earns the next conversation by making the opportunity, evidence and capital-to-milestone logic immediately visible.

Short answer: the business plan supports depth, diligence and internal consistency; the pitch deck supports attention, discussion and progression to the next investor step. Both must tell the same story.

Two documents, two jobs

A fundraising business plan explains the company, market, alternatives, technology or offering, commercial model, go-to-market system, team, milestones, risks and financial outlook in enough depth to understand how the venture is expected to create value.

A pitch deck is selective. It makes the few ideas an investor must remember easy to see: why now, why this problem, why this solution, why this company, what has been proven, what remains uncertain, how capital will be used and what the next stage will mean.

What a strong deck must make visible

  • Why now: the market or technology change creating urgency.
  • Why this company: controlled assets, expertise, evidence and access that support the right to win.
  • Why this approach: the reason customers should prefer it over named alternatives.
  • What capital changes: milestones, risks retired, runway and the evidence available at the end of the round.
  • What scale requires: economics, delivery constraints and future funding or self-sustainability thresholds.

Why technology fundraising needs additional logic

Technology labels do not establish an investment case. Investors need to know what the company actually developed, what it licences or buys, which dependencies constrain progress, whether customers value the technical advantage and what the R&D roadmap means commercially.

In the XX Ambient Care Systems case, radar was not treated as an automatic advantage. The work compared it with cameras, wearables, pressure sensors and existing workflows; mapped technical control and dependencies; separated pilots from paid adoption; and connected seed capital to specific commercial evidence.

How the documents should work together

The business plan, deck and financial model should share one fact register and one assumption set. Revenue, customer milestones, hiring, product releases, capital need and runway cannot change simply because the format changes. The deck compresses the story; it does not invent a more attractive one.
